See how much xps you need for a lvl 8 ranger. Then see about lvl 8 Cleric. Take the number directly in the middle of the two (round up by a point if it is an uneven measurement). Then plug in the cleric stuff at the appropriate level and the ranger stuff at the appropriate level. Then add them together, and Viola! A Cleric/Ranger. Blind-fight is a one-time cost of 1 proficiency slot.
Proficiencies go like this:
A Magic-User type (illusionist, wizard) gains 1 nonweapon per two levels, 1 weapon per 4 levels.
A Priest (druid, cleric) gains 1 nonweapon every 3 levels and 1 weapon every 3 levels.
A Rogue (bard, thief) gains 1 nonweapon every 3 levels and 1 weapon every 3 levels.
A Warrior (paladin, ranger, fighter) gains 1 nonweapon every 4 levels, and 1 weapon every 2 levels. *Specializing costs two weapon proficiency slots, and only a fighter can double specialize*

does a multiclass gain proficiencies for each class, or just in the class that gains them the fastest? For example, does my 7/6 thief mage 3 weapon proficiencies from being a theif and 2 for being a wizard or just three from being a theif?

Unfortunately, they only gain the three from being a thief. Sorry buddy, otherwise you get too powerful too fast. Mind you, proficiency is with only one weapon at a time, any other weapon strikes at a -1 "to hit". So you know, I will roll the combat dice myself, and post results, but ability checks will be done like this:
DM: Please roll me a 20-sided die, (enter name here).
Player: For what?
DM: My amusement... just roll it.
Player: Okay. *Rolls* I got a 17.
DM: You slowly begin to feel sick (you rolled over your constitution, buddy :P) and then things begin to fade. You slip into unconsciousness from the poison you ingested last night. Roll me one d20 until you roll under your constitution, and for each time you fail, lose 1 HP.
Player: Crap. 20... 18... 19... why can't I roll like this in battle? AHA! 12!.
(Now an example of combat, based from that encounter)
DM: You wake up three hours later being dragged down the street by a man in black garb, he is pulling you into an alley, and he has a pretty large knife that looks like it's dripping acid onto the ground. You have several holes burnt in your clothes (3), and you know he is intending to murder you. Roll intitiative (lowest goes first). The black garbed man is surprised, so you may get one free attack before initiative is rolled.
Player: Okay, i'm rolling. 20! Yes! I critically hit that (enter foul words here). And I do... 24 points of damage (he is using a longsword (1d8). He rolled an 8, plus his 4 for an 18 strength, gives him 12. Double that for a crit.)
DM: Your sword sings through the air, and he turns to investigate. As he does so, your sword slices directly through his head, and the top half of it falls off, leaking blood everywhere. He is dead, but now you have a bigger problem... the guards are after you.
(etc.,etc.,etc.)
And there you have it folks, welcome my gaming world, where the impossible become possible, and the paranoid really do have people out to get them... sometimes.

i edited my previous post for proficiencies and an equipement wish list
also @ morty; by my calculations you'd be a ranger 6 cleric 7 (65,000xp in each)
there is really only one thing i wish 3rd eddition had, and that's old school multiclassing, sadly it just doesn't work the same way....

A gift is bestowed upon you by a god of Chaos, Kumathos. He wishes for you to worship him and aid in spreading his chaos across the land. If so, he promises you the following equipment, as per your request.
1 Dagger of Return. This dagger is a +3 melee weapon that can also be thrown. Upon reaching the desired range, spoken aloud before it is thrown, the dagger teleports back to it's sheath.
3 Wands, each with 50 charges. The first is a wand of sleep, 1 charge per cast. The next is a wand of Energy drain: Drains 1 level from the target if it fails a save vs. death magic (PPD), one use of this wand costs 3 strength permanently and 25 charges, but it can save you in a pich. The last is a wand of cure light wounds, always curing 8 HP of damage plus caster level (in your wizard class) one use costs 1 charge.
Also, you have been promised sharp black robes, the nicest you've seen yet. They have five stars assembled at the five points of a pentacle on the chest. It is the holy symbol of Kumathos, god of chaos and magic. Kumathos demands one ritual sacrifice per week, on the sunset of the last day of the week. This may be anything from a rat to a giant. The more fight it puts up, the more rewards you will recieve.
This is your only offer from Kumathos, if you turn it down, you start with 3 daggers, two of them are throwing daggers, a pouch full of mirthral darts +1 (15), and whatever cloak and robes you were wearing before.
Any other item requests will be similarly responded to, seeing the very small party size.

hmmmm....thats a toughy....Is Kumathos a demon/devil/fiend, cuz Ven would never serve a demon or otherwise essentially evil being. He wouldn't serve an extrodinarily good one either. If he's a more or less neutral godling Ven will probably take him up on that, since it promises some pretty good rewards, and he was planing on spreading chaos anyway....just don't expect him to be too devout, it'll most likely be rats...or that mondays stew if its getting lively...

ranger 6 cleric 7
Okay, how many slots does my hero START with? I gain 2 non-weapons and 3 weapons...
My non-weapons will go to Read/Write and Distance Sense... any good half-elf raised in elven society learns the world of a scholar. And, any good ranger knows the size of his foot and how many he's put down.
For the weapons, two in maces (proficient, specialized) and one in hunter's bow (proficient). I already start with two-weapon fighting... can i specialize in that too? I don't even know how it works, or how many extra I get, but I'll assume we don't get in a fight for at least two posts.
Also, can I add a few things to my inventory? I'd like a rope, grappling hook, torch, flint and tinder, bedroll, waterskin, boot knife, and hatchet (not really for fighting, more for firewood, but it makes a good thrown weapon in an emergency)
