Werewolves of the Demon Forest

A young ranger was stalking out on the edge of the demon forest. He saw movement up ahead and ran to the site of where the beast had been. The tracks looked like those of a large wolf... but they were spread like those of a man. He dipped his fingers in the soil, took a taste, a smell, and a good look at it, and then spat on the ground. A hawk flew down onto his shoulder, "Well, old friend... it looks as if... well, it looks like this thing we've been tracking is a werewolf, or a creature very akin to it. Go scout the area." He released the hawk from his arm, and it scouted out the area. While it did so, he waited on a rock, his bow over his back and his broadsword in his hand. He was on high alert, but he did not appear aggressive at all.

A short ways off Alphonse looked down at a map in his hands and then at the surounding area.
"Great...it all looks the same..."
Though he resembled a werefox he was not the one the ranger was tracking. The distinction was made at his feet, which were plantigrade like a human, it also helped that he wore sandles and wasn't barefoot.
With a sigh he scratched his head and looked around. He couldn't figure out why anyone would choose to live here but this is where Joe said he would find these people. He didn't like the idea that he might one day have to kill someone with the straight sword at his belt, but in this world it looked increasingly like a little training on how to use it wouldn't hurt.

The ranger came up over a hedge, chsing the werewolf, and saw Alphonse, drawing and knocking an arrow and taking tight aim on him. "State your reason for being here, creature! I know you werewolves don't travel alone... wait... you're not the wolf... but you are a were-creature... why should i trust what you say? You may be in league with the wolves!" He slowly walked around the edge of the clearing, keeping aim on him and looking occasionally about for the appearance of one such wolf. The tip of his arrow gleamed silver in the hanging mist of the forest.

Al started turning.
"What-wolves?"
Seeing the arrow he raised his hands.
"..wha'..uh...umm...what was it I was suposed to have done now?"

"You're in league with that pack of werewolves I've been tracking, aren't you? you're a scout, right? Where are they?" He walked into the clearing, getting closer to Alphonse. "You look like a crossbreed of some kind... are you a gnoll?" He shook his head and then spoke softly, "You're not like them... which means you're not a werewolf... but you look like a hybrid of some sort, and you aren't a gnoll, which makes you a Werecritter or a demon. Which are you? SPEAK!" He was hurried in his speech, and it could be seen in his eyes that he was frightened of the wolves, "Speak your piece, creature, and then we may both dodge the fury of the pack."

"Uhhh...I..don't know? I really don't know what any of those are...I'm kinda new to these parts."
Unfortunatly he was speaking the truth, he honestly had no idea what the man was talking about. The world he was from had been void of any magic so not even tall tales had much chance to brew.
"I was human til a few weeks ago, then I fell through this hole thing, honestly? I don't know what I am..."

"If you speak true, which i think you do... Borris will know. BORRIS!" He called out over his shoulder and a large grizzly bear wandered up, covered in many battle scars and wearing a patch handstitched by the ranger. The bear sniffed him and sat down, groaning as bears often do, but not truly roaring. The ranger relaxed his bow. if he'll trust you, then maybe I should too. Look, there are people in this forest who..." A werewolf jumped out of a nearby tree onto the ranger, who fell to the ground, holding the bow firmly to keep the beast off of him, "They're only hurt by silver! BORRIS! GET HIM!" The bear dove on the werewolf, and they wrestled for a minute or two before a strategically places silver arrow to the head ended the beast's life. the wolf slowly shifted back to a man with an arrow set into its skull through its eye. The ranger came up and pulled the arrow out of the creature's eye. "I'm here to hunt them. have you seen one like that before? They're big, and gray, and they travel in groups of 4 or 5 usually, somtimes, they'll wait and try to attack me one at a time... I've been hunting this pack for a year now." He walked over to Al. "I'm Gordo Lightshaft... you can call me Shaft if you want, it's what everyone else does."

Al looked down at the body.
"Uhh...Alphonse...er my name that is...most just call me Al..."
He tapped the body with his toe.
"That always happen?"

Shaft inhaled heavily through his nose, "Only if you use silver or cut the head off, otherwise, they just heal and run away later. They're cursed with a disease... a disease that makes them become like that and then crave flesh... like... human flesh." he knocked another arrow in his bow, "You know how to fight?"

Al put a hand on the hilt of his sword and seemed to frown a little.
"Well...not really...thats kinda why I'm here, I was suposed to meet someone. Uh that is to say someone to teach me."
He looked at his map.
"Thing is...the map I was given isn't very good, the whole area looks the same to me and this Darren guy lives about right in the middle by the look of it..."
