Where has Cain been?
Why have my replies been so slow of late you might be thinking. Well kiddies, let me tell you. I have been cheating on you with another role play site. Well...two role play sites. The first was the ninja forums, then it was Last Network. Both are single world sites, unlike DKD's multi-world. Each have their strengths and weaknesses.
For example, both have a single rule set for all RP on the site, rather then DKD's random chaos with each world having different rules. THis also has the advantage that they need only a site wide character sheet system, which in turn allowed a sort of structured advancement system. In other words, characters had abilities that grew with them. The ninja forums have issued a one PC per player rule for beginners, then allow more characters at higher ranks.
Now disadvantages... well first there is less diversity in characters, as they are all in the same world set. (Although Last Network is still fairly open ended.) Second, with the ninja forum's single character rule and single thread at a time rule, you are stuck waiting around for a bit if people go MIA.
Personally out of all the aspects I like the single character generation system, especially where it allows characters from one area to move to another freely, but I especial like the structured system for rank up each has. (Although Last Network is just starting out so some of the rules are just hazy smoke so far.
However with a site with few active players the single character rule and single thread rule just cause trouble. Although I like the single thread per character rule simply in that it allows a constant single line time line....unless the site has areas in diffent Eras...then you get time loops where you're your own gandpa...which is odd...
In any case if you want to look the sites over for yourself.
Well, I'm not allowed to help you there.
However, I was wondering what people would think of creating a site wide character sheet system. Maybe including a system for rank up or level up of characters. I admit there are strengths and weaknesses to this system.
