Races
In New Haven there are as many races as there are kinds of ice cream. Here are just a few that we know about. If you're one we don't let me know. After all a girl needs to know who is invading her town.
Dark Elf
Several centuries ago a group of elves were banished from their forest home when they started to bulk against the seclusion of all elves. Sentenced to live beneath the earth for their continued wanderings into the mortal realm, most now have an extremely dislike/hatred for their elven cousins. Unable to feel the sun upon their skin they adapted in order to live in their current environment. When night falls they are allowed to come to the surface and know the freedom of clean air. However with the sunrise the spell cast on them forces them back beneath the earth. Living in seclusion deep beneath the earth they share much in common with their elven cousins. They are natural immortals (immune to disease, recover rapidly from wounds, heal others). However like mortals they can be killed. They also possess a natural ability with bow and arrows, remarkable agility, heightened senses, and affinity with all of nature. Their height, black/light gray/purplish skin tone, white/silver/black/purple hair, dark/silver eyes, and pointed ears make them easily identifiable. Because they reside deep beneath the earth they also share an affinity with metals and gems. There cave can be found in the mountains outside of New Haven. They often venture into New Haven at night. But be careful of entering their cave. It’s said one you enter the caves of the Dark Elves, you never leave. Personally I wouldn't mine. I hear the Dark Elf males are built. That's something I could sink my teeth into gladly.
Elf
Living in seclusion in a forest realm that mortals are unable to find, the elves are natural immortals (immune to disease, recover rapidly from wounds, heal others). However like mortals they can be killed. They also possess a natural ability with bow and arrows, remarkable agility, heightened senses, and affinity with all of nature. Their height, light skin tone, hair tones that can range from vibrant greens to deep browns to light yellows, and pointed ears make them easily identifiable. Because of their habitat they share a deeper affinity with trees and plants than their dark elf cousins. Many have regretted the banishment spell placed on their dark elf cousins and believe that it is time to lift the spell. However once it was done it could not be undone except through a great sacrifice. To enter the elves forest you must be escorted by an elf or know the word that opens the gateway, which exists within the forest near the mountains. If you ask me living in seclusion is downright boring. But what's a girl to do? Those elves certainly have mysterious down.
Humans
Humans are the predominant species in New Haven. Most exist without the knowledge of the beings that come to their village. There are some however who know of the creatures. They are often Halflings. Born of an union between humans and one of the creatures. Yet there are also those that know simply because they themselves are extraordinary. Witches, vampire/demon hunters, psychics, and more. I personally call some humans my friends. But those hunters are really irksome. There necks sure do break easily though. Hey don't judge. You'd kill them to if they were trying to behead you with a silver sword or riddle you with silver bullets.
Mermaids
The half-fish half-women lured countless sailors to their deaths. They did so to keep sailors out of the seas they called home and to prevent merefolk from being hunted and captured. Mermen are elite warriors in the water, and few can defeat them in there. Breathtakingly beautiful humans from their torso-upwards, their lower bodies is a tail complete with scales. Their hair comes in a wide range of naturally occurring oceanic colors; black, dark green through pale green, turquoise, blue, lavender/purple, white, and silver. All the skin above the waist is a pale greenish or bluish color. A fine webbing is present between each of their fingers. They seem to have pointed ears much like an elves. Mermaids can leave the ocean but experience a great weakness and lethargy when kept from it. There tails vanish and instead they have the legs of humans, but water will bring forth their tails once more. If denied sea water they will eventually die. They are telepathic using telepathy to communicate with each other. They also have an affinity for the sea and it’s creatures as well as the ability to summon storms. The city of Atlantis houses their race in the deepest part of unexplored waters off the coast of New Haven. Lately they have taken to hiding within Atlantis’ protected bubble as man encroaches more and more on their territory and their numbers dwindle. Starting to wonder if these actually exist. I've never seen one and considering how old I am (something I will never tell anyone) that's telling you something. But they're reclusive so maybe they still exist.
Siren
Sirens are a race of women who are as beautiful as they are seductive. When a siren sings one can not avoid the compulsion to do as she asks. Many have been lured to them with but a few breathtaking notes and appearance of innocence. Despite their beautiful songs a siren can not speak except to sing, in this way they are mute. Hunted and imprisoned for their talent the sirens are another race that has become extinct or so it is believed. The last of their kind was rumored to have disappeared within the last century. The only way to enslave a siren is using the arm bands that had been made by the Greek God Poseidon himself to enslave any wayward sirens. The person who snapped the arm bands on the siren controlled that siren. It is unknown how many were made. Many believe there is only one set. Siren’s skin is a creamy pale and they wear dresses made of a flowing white material that accents their curves. Their hair is long and pale in color (pale green, turquoise, light blue, white, and silver). They have light eyes tending towards grays, greens, and blues. Talk about your deadly voice. I once knew a siren. She had this way about her that as a predator I could identify with. They certainly took man hating to a whole new level. Pity about the whole extinct thing. Then again nothing is ever extinct in our world. I have a feeling their in hidding. I would be too if an arm band could end up controlling me.
Undines
These are the elemental spirits of water. Their magic centers upon this element, whose course and function they can control. Undines exist within the water itself and their homes are typically within the coral caves in lakes or upon the banks of rivers. Their appearance is similar to human beings in most cases. Undine clothing shimmers, reflecting all the colors of water though green is typically the predominant color. Every body of water is home to undines. Even waterfalls and fountains have an undine living in their midst. They live only as long as the water they call home exists. Humans increasing encroachment of their homes has caused many undine to be destroyed. Their hair and eyes reflect the colors of water. The thing about undines is don't do anything to their water. They get really pissy if you start messing with it. I personally ask before even doing something like taking a drink. It's better to be polite then risk an undines wrath.
Vampires
Vampires require the blood of humans to live. A mortal can be turned if blood is shared between vampire and mortal. However this is against vampire law except in cases of true mating. Therefore all vampires are technically allowed the turning of one mortal, someone who would be their mate. Turning a mortal not ones mate is punishable by death if done without the King’s permission. Vampires have increased strength, speed, agility, and senses far greater than that of humans, the ability to shapeshift, ability to summon and control animals, and telepathy/mid control. They can create fog, mist, rain, and bring down lightening to incinerate. They also have the ability to heal with their mind. Most can perform this task on a small scale for more advanced healing one must seek the aid of a vampire healer. With the coming centuries more and more vampires have turned to the darker sides of their nature and kill while feeding. Doing so brings down the wrath of the King and his Slayers. However more and more of these feral vampires are turning humans and aligning themselves with demons and vampire hunters, making it harder to find and destroy them. An attack was even made within the vampire stronghold against one of the King’s daughters who barely survived. Vampires appear like mortal humans. The only notable difference is their dark colored eyes (tending towards black, violets, browns, and greens) and their lengthened incisors. When a vampire has killed while feeding their eyes turn towards a blood red that is unmistakable. Their only weakness appears to be the sun which creates a great lethargy in them until at noon they are unable to stay awake. The older the vampire the longer they can stand the sunrise and the earlier they can awaken at sunset. Drinking blood.....ewww. Enough said. One of my good friends is a vampire. Asked her about it one time. She just smirked and said it's erotic for the bitee and food for her. To each his own.
Were-cats
Like werewolves the were-cats have three basic forms. In human form they have increased strength, eyesight, hearing, and healing (none as good as in their were-cat form). They also have an increase in agility. In cat form they have all the characteristics of the cat they turn into with the intelligence of a human. In were-cat form they are part cat, part man with the superior strength, speed, agility, and senses of the cat but the intelligence and size of a human. In this form healing is almost instantaneous. However they have a weakness to wolfsbane and if silver causes a mortal wound they can not heal it. There are as many different types of were-cats as they are big cats in the world. Despite the variety of were-cats they are united beneath one ruler and are each represented on a council of were-cats. Possibly because cats and dogs are natural enemies the were-cats do not associate with the were-wolves. If one species meets the other on the street they are wary and often fights ensue. However when many were-cats began to actively hunt and kill werewolves a law was passed. To actively hunt and kill a werewolf results in banishment, possibly death. Banishment is worse than death to a social species like them. Were-cats resemble humans except for their uncanny eyes that are closer to a cat’s in appearance and color (blue, green, orange, yellow, gold). Their hair color tends to be the color of their cat form coat. It's good to be Queen. That is all.
Werewolves
Werewolves have three basic forms. In human form they have increased strength, eyesight, hearing, and healing (none as good as in their were form). In wolf form they have all the characteristics of a wolf with the intelligence of a human. In were form they are part wolf, part man with the superior strength, speed, agility, and senses of the wolf but the intelligence and size of a human. In this form healing is almost instantaneous. However they have a weakness to wolfsbane and if silver causes a mortal wound they can not heal it. Werewolves are natural enemies of were-cats. Their feud has lasted since the two races first come into contact. At one time werewolves guarded vampires during the day and during a full moon vampires ensured that werewolves stayed caged. All of that changed when a werewolf turned rogue and attacked and killed the vampires he was supposed to guard. The vampires seeking retribution for his massacre of the family demanded him and his family be turned over for justice. The werewolves denied the vampires request and instead killed him themselves. This did not appease the vampires who wanted to make a statement that the killing of their children would result in swift action against the culprit and the culprit’s family. This created a rift between the two races which has never been mended. Now seriosuly I want to be nice, and they are after all like us. But I mean come on....dogs.....They scartch and lick and bite themselves. They're so unclean and unsanitary. Gross.
