Default Thoughts on a new campaign

Simply that... I was poking around a few of my old character sheets and came across some notes for a campaign that started then died off when one of my gaming group went to YahweCon (sp?) - got a second job to save the coin, then spent all the next few weeks paying off his credit card. We started a game of Battlefleet Gothic, and haven't gone back to D&D since.

Anyways, what would your guys' thoughts be on a Merc campaign? Since the seating is rather limited, I'm not sure how we'll go about it, but the thoughts that we (my group and I) had come up with revolved around Pirates, or Bandits, or a sort of military Strike Squad (so fighters and warmages and scouts rather than barbarians and Wizards and whatnots...), or perhaps more traditinal sellswords from a long-standing war where it's a silver for every ten elf ears, or whatever.

I'm most familiar with 3.5, so that is what I will lean towards. Depending what catches peoples' fancy I could set you up as the classic adventuring group or split you up or whatever the concensus is. Also, guessing it'll only be Larrin and DC, since the only other people to have shown interest in the more traditional games have long since disappeared...

I always seem to have some eccentric characters. Make the box and Ill work within it.

I'll leave it mostly up to random chance... we can either roll stats (I trust you), point buy, or use a standard array (15 14 13 12 10 8).

Thinking what I'll do is set you at level six, whatever books you want, but keep yourself as militaristic as possible. Let's go with a smaller town (200 or so?), minimal local support but it is your goal to keep the peace both in town and in the outer fringes. Choose how and why you want to be a peacekeeper, and I'll start writing up some notes.

If you want to be a sherriff, cool. If you want to be just another local, sure. If you want to be weeding out the competition for your eventual uprising, have it your way. Up to you if you start in the same town or each have a village of your own to protect. Starting cash will be half of the book's listed gold; I will roll random treasures for you to generate the rest, and based off your character I will sell ridiculous ones (like a Scroll of Cure Light Wounds for a barbarian) and finally I will pick one item for each of you based on your role in the community.

There will be one other surprise thrown your way, but that doesn't matter because it will be a secret addition (which changes little, but will either buff you up nicely or balance out your weaknesses, depending on the luck of it).

Thank you, and happy hunting.

Can you clarify the system? If you leave it open to anything Ill pull from White Wolf Dark Ages. If its DnD 3.5 or 4? Or are you going GURPS on us? Just want to make sure before I get a "WTF is this!?" on a character sheet.

We'll do 3.5, since I haven't played any White Wolf in ten years...

Alrite, so choose from the three arrays listed below
{18,14,11,10,10,8}
{16,16,12,10,10,10}
{14,14,14,14,12,8}

6500gp to spend, no limit on how much can go to any item (so if you spend it all in one place, go nuts!

Rolled each of you seven items from the level-appropriate tables in the Magic Item Compendium, won't post those until you get your character idea settled (not sure why I cannot see those pictures :/) since I feel that randomly-acquired treasures fit the concept of adventuring better. If you want, wait until you see the items before you choose the rest of your gear, as it may affect things.

If you want, I can find a link where you can download a .pdf of the Magic Item Compendium to look at cool magic gear not in the other books (I'd let you read mine but the shipping and handling would be painful, let alone the time delay of mailing it back and forth between us) and trust that you would delete it afterwards in the spirit of sharing rather than pirating.

I'll try to type up a description of the general world in the next few days, though if you want to sort of build in your own things with your characters' back-story then I will gladly incorporate it!

I have a .pdf copy of the Magic Item Compendium. If Larrin (or anyone else looking to get in) doesnt have one I can forward a copy, size 34MB. I obtained .pdf copies of all the game books I had cause moving libraries while living in a 10x10 box is no fun. And that hero generator, I dont know why it wont show you...did you paste the entire text?

Sounds great; there are a few special options for Elven Rangers listed in the 'Races of the Wild' book that might be worth checking out, should you want. In short, the hit dice drops from d8 to d6, but skills per level boost to 8 + intel instead of 6+...
There's also a hound with different stat blocks available to elves, and they get a slightly better bonus if they pick favoured enemies like Orks, Undead, and 'Servants of Lolth'.

Anyways, look forward to seeing it. I'll be back online in a bit to list your treasures, now that you've got a character in your head.
