The term originated as hired solders but later became spread out to simply any hireling. Although if I remember correctly I believe the connotation to that is simply that its short term, not career, for each job. I may be wrong. By that meaning even a farmhand could be considered a mercenary."

He shruged as the door behind him opened. The burger was passed out by a white gloved hand, but little else was seen of the chef. Joe in turn passed the burger to the man before turning to Jal-Koon.

"Can I get you anything?"

you do have some point there, and as far as the weapons go i keep them for my protection on jobs
he looked down at the burger and picked it up and started to eat.

Jal's face twitched and he flashed a toothy grin.

"Naw, I'm fine. That's quite a knowledge of terminology you've got there!"

The lone hornet buzzed happily around the burger waiting for a scrap it could commandeer.

he looked at the hornet and took a chunk off of his buger and chucked it at the hornet.
now buzz off bee i am trying to eat.

The insect gleefully snatched the morsel and it quickly escaped into the collar of Jal's robes. A chorus of happy arthropidic hums emanated from the oily cloth.

"You fed them... now they'll never leave you alone. Most people just squish 'em."

i do hurt people or things just because. if i break your arm it is because someone paid me to break it.

"Interesting outlook you have there my good sir."

He traced the grain of the table's wood with a bony finger.

"Is there anything you wouldn't do if the price was right?"

i have lived through it all. I have a some simple rules i live by.
One i dont ask names
two i only ask for the bare knowledge for the job nothing more nothing less.
3 you pay me up front otherwise i forget you exist.

Joe leaned back against the wall considering it for a moment.
"Ah yes, the simple way to make enemies."

He crossed his arms, pausing a moment before pulling out a crumpled up cigarette and putting it in his mouth but not lighting it.

" So you are the type who believes empathy would slow you down then?"

i beilve that becoming attached to someone or some thing will slow you down.
